Far too often, students feel that their work is trivial, thus they do the bare minimum to get the projects done. As teachers, we strive to change this mindset. An often forgotten part of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, the Standards for Mathematical Practice are just as important as the content standards. They provide a guide for how teachers can work to develop students as strong mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Learn to Code with Google Apps Script

Google Apps Script is a simple to use tool can enhance Google Apps in a countless number of ways. It is based on javascript, and because the code is developed and run online, it is very simple for beginners to develop applications. This is significant, because if the barriers to application development are lowered, people with strong backgrounds in education (and not necessarily in computer science) could develop relevant, effective learning and productivity applications.

After this session, participants will understand what Google Apps Script is, and what it is capable of. You will know how to find and interpret documentation, and where to access tutorials other learning materials. You will write several short scripts that demonstrate how this simple tool can extend Google Apps.

This session will be very hands on, with your fingers on the keyboard, learning through exploration.

GeoGebra, Desmos, and gMath are outstanding mathematics tools that are available as Google Chrome Web Apps or Add-ons with Google Drive integration. This means that students can create and explore with these free web-based mathematical tools with the added benefit of Google Drive’s sharing capabilities and anywhere access.

GeoGebra (geogebra.org) is dynamic geometry software, similar to Geometer’s Sketchpad. Desmos (desmos.com) is a beautiful, browser based graphing calculator that makes traditional graphing calculators look like a slide rule.

In this hands on session you will be learn how to get started with each of these apps, along with some examples how how they can be incorporated into your mathematics curriculum.

Google Classroom, a valuable component of the G Suite for Education, was designed to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly. Classroom includes time-saving features, such as the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google Drive file for each student. Classroom helps keep everyone organized through auto-created folders and naming conventions. Since its launch, Classroom has become so much more than a workflow management platform! During this hands-on interactive session, you will experience Google Classroom as a student as we explore Classroom and its application for you as a teacher. We will explore the various components of Google Classroom from adding students to assigning and collecting content digitally. Time will be spent exploring the updates to Classroom that make it a must-have tool for every teacher. Screencasting: Making Thinking Visible

Screencasting is a powerful way for students to visualize their thinking. This session will focus on integrating screencasting into your instructional practices and creating opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding. Screencasting allows students to practice speaking and listening skills, give and receive feedback and self-reflect on their learning. Screencasting can be integrated across content areas to create meaningful learning experiences that engage your students and promote the 4Cs. This session will focus on effective strategies for embedding screencasting tools into your learning environment. We will explore apps that can be integrated with G-Suite for Education including Screencastify, Movenote, Explain Everything, Lensoo Create and Snagit. Using these tools allows students to create and publish authentic artifacts that demonstrate mastery of classroom content and learning goals. You’ll come away with hands-on experiences, sample lessons, and best practice-based classroom application.

Empowering Students through Feedback & Reflection

Collaboration and communication through the implementation of digital learning practices help prepare all students to succeed as lifelong learners. Formative assessment can be used to improve student achievement and, when students receive descriptive feedback on their work, they are able to analyze what they have done well and identify areas for improvement. Digital Tools including G Suite for Education and iPad apps can provide students with effective tools to help learners receive and provide feedback, along with opportunities to reflect on the learning outcomes. This session will focus on checking for understanding and providing targeted feedback and opportunities for reflection through the use of G Suite for Education tools, G Suite Add-Ons, Web Apps and iPad Apps. We will also look at the use of digital portfolios with the app Seesaw to create opportunities for students to give and receive meaningful feedback. You’ll come away with hands-on experiences, sample lessons/activities, and best practices/classroom applications for creating growth in the use of feedback through designing digital learning experiences.

Creating Karaoke Kids: Promoting Innovative Projects with GAFE and Digital Citizenship

Our students have entered a tipping point in internet culture - the era of negative commentary, cyber-bullying, and uncensored social media posts. So how do we cultivate "Karaoke Kids" - students who care about sharing their knowledge and giving judgement-free support to others who create?

In this session, we will talk about how to pursue innovative projects that encourage students to create projects that aim to teach others around the world, and how to breed a culture of supportive internet commentary through their peers' work. Topics will range from innovative video projects to creative visual arts, emphasizing Google Apps for Education and other tools that allow for commentary and sharing.

In addition, we will talk about how a "Karaoke Kid" culture inherently teaches Digital Citizenship without painful lectures and campy videos. Get ready to sing like no one's listening!
